RESEARCH

Dr Wells is continuously involved in research projects, often collaborative, with both academic and applied perspectives. His research interests include prospective materials use, government policies of all types relevant to the automotive industry, environmental issues, and strategies in the vehicle manufacturers and components suppliers. His research is usually of an investigative or analytical character, but is also highly bespoke, tailored to the requirements of the situation and needs of the client.

You may require a special report on the industry that brings together into one document the ‘state of the art’ for the topic in question. Combining leading academic thinking with industry best practice, Dr Wells can prepare special reports for market analysis, legal expert witness statements, campaigning organisations, government policy evaluations and more. Examples of work recently undertaken of this character include:

- A report on the extent and type of ‘hidden innovation’ in the automotive industry for NESTA, a UK government body concerned with promoting excellence in science and technology.

- A campaigning report for Greenpeace UK on the safety and environmental performance of large 4x4 cars in urban areas. Originally written as an expert witness report for Greenpeace.

Sometimes, leading research and consulting organisations can benefit from the inclusion of automotive industry expertise within a larger study or piece of work. Dr Wells can provide that expertise, and has a wide experience of working with leading organisations including Ernst and Young, CAPGemini, and Ashridge Consulting as well as smaller, more focussed organisations. The nature of the partnership is highly flexible according to requirements. Examples of this include:

- Collaboration with CRU International in a series of studies on the future of aluminium and steel consumption in the automotive industry.

- Evaluation along with Experian of the proposed changes to the London ‘congestion charging’ scheme by Transport for London.

- Evaluation along with IEEP of Brussels of the proposed CO2 emissions regime for the European Commission.
